Skincare: The Basics

Hey dolls,

This week I’m going to be trying to demystify all things skincare after a chat with my lovely friend Beth. Quick disclaimer, I’m not a dermatologist, I’m just sharing what works for me and what I’ve learnt.

So this post is going to be going back to basics from a morning routine to evening routine.

Let’s start with the morning! You might not think it but cleansing your face in the morning is just as important as the evening, but I want something quick so tend to opt for cleansing pads. The Nip ‘n’ Fab ones are my favourites, just sweep all over your face and you are good to go!

Then onto moisturising my face, if you take away one thing from this post let it be this- SPF! Now we’re in spring/summer it’s super important to use a facial SPF every day. Not only does SPF protect your skin from UVA/UVB rays but it also helps to prevent wrinkles and ageing. I’ve been loving the Dermalogica SPF daily moisturiser. It’s super lightweight and sits nicely under makeup. I also use an eye cream to hydrate and brighten my under eyes every morning.

My evening routine is slightly longer but doesn’t take more than 10 minutes!

Step 1: Cleansing/Make-up remover

First of all, ditch the makeup wipes! They are full of drying ingredients, of course fine for a one off but avoid using them everyday.

I love cleansing/removing my makeup with balms or cream cleansers. They remove all the everything from the day and leave your skin feeling fresh. Double cleansing is a great way to make sure your skin is completely clean, you can use the same cleanser twice or a makeup remover followed by a cleanser. La Roche Posay and Liz Earle are my favourite cleanser brands.

Step 2: Toner

This is a step a lot of people will skip, but it’s possibly my favourite part. Using a toner helps to ensure your skin is clean, remove impurities, close pores and restore PH balance. I love the La Roche Posay soothing lotion and Pixi tonics.

Step 3: Serum/Oil (optional)

Serums and oils offer an extra punch to your skincare routine, they way they are made means the ingredients can better penetrate your skin. These are great for anti-ageing, hydration and whole other host of skincare benefits. There are serums that help with pretty much every skincare concern, so my advice here would be do your research!

Step 4: Moisturiser

Moisturising you skin is vital to rehydrate, repair and prevent ageing. Once again there are a range of moisturisers out there for oily, combination and dry skin. My favourite brands are Lancome, La Roche Posay, Clarins and Elizabeth Arden.

Step 5: Eye Cream and lip balm

Keeping your undereyes hydrated is so important as it is a super delicate area and prone to wrinkles. Again there are all sorts of eye creams available, I tend to opt for a brighting cream as I have dark undereyes. My favourite brands are Estee Lauder, Origins and Kielhs. Keeping your lips hydrated is also key, so grab your fave lip balm and pop a good layer on before bed!

Right so that’s every night sorted, now onto your 2 or 3 times a week bits of skincare!

Exfoliating

Exfoliating your skin removes dead skin cells, removes impurities and boosts circulation and a tonne of other benefits. Doing this a couple of times a week will keep your skin looking fresh, be warned if you don’t usually exfoliate you may break out as your face gets rid of the bad stuff. My go to brand for exfoliator is Nip ‘n’ Fab, they are affordable and do the job!

Face masks

This is your pamper time! There are tonnes of face masks out there, all offering different benefits. I try to use a clarifying/detoxing mask once a week and then a hydrating mask once a week. I love the Glam Glow masks (supermud doubles as a great spot treatment!), L’Oreal and Origins masks. Whether you pick up a sheet mask or a pot, choose products that help with your skincare concerns.

Wow, that was a lot to cover! I hope this helps you out, the importance of skincare has been drummed into me since I was young (thanks Mum!) and as she says you only have one face so need to look after it!

15 Minute Everyday Makeup Routine

Hey Dolls,

This week I thought I would share with you my everyday makeup routine. This routine is super easy and so quick which I love for the morning when you need to get out the door.

After cleansing my face and popping some eye cream and lip balm on (updated skincare coming soon) I’m onto my makeup.

Right so let’s start with the base! Up until recently I only really used mattifying primers but the Bobbi Brow Face Base changed all that. It leaves my skin glowing and hydrated, perfect for the current weather and with Bobbi Brown tinted moisturiser I have a winning combo! I prefer a tinted moisturiser or BB cream day to day as opposed to foundation as it gives a more natural look.

For concealer I switch between Nars Creamy Concealer and Tarte Shape Tape depending on how much coverage I want to add, these two are easily my favourite concealers. I set my under eye with Laura Mercier Loose Powder and the rest of my face with Benefit Hello Flawless.

I can’t do my makeup without bronzer, I don’t think my makeup looks complete without it and my current fave is Mac Mineralise Skin Finish. For blush I always reach for Benefit Sugarbomb, a blush I have been using for years! My final face step is highlight and at the moment I am loving Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder because it gives a beautiful natural glow.

Onto eyes and I keep it really simple and sweep one or two shades from the NYX Warm palette onto my lids, curl my lashes and pop on my L’Oreal Volume Million Lashes. I’m lucky to have quite full brows so just run Benefit Gimmie Brow through them and I’m good to go!

A quick spritz of Smashbox Photo Finish Setting spray and whatever lip colour I’m wearing that day and I’m ready to go!

Updated Skincare Routine!

Hey dolls,

This week I wanted to share my updated skincare routine. I’ve always been a bit of a skincare addict, I blame Mum for that, so here is my updated day and night skincare!

Mornings are always a bit manic so I want something quick and easy to start the day. I grab some cleansing pads either the Nip n Fab Dragon Blood ones or the Vitamin E ones from Superdrug that I am currently using. These leave my skin feeling fresh with no hassle! Then to moisturise I use the Nip n Fab Post Glycolic Fix moisturiser and Vitamin E  eye cream. I love these products because they sit so nicely underneath my makeup and don’t make my skin feel greasy!

My evening routine firstly removing my makeup, recently I have been loving the Garner Micellar water cleansing gel. I use this in the shower and it removes most of my makeup, I then cleanse with my trusty Liz Earle Hot Cloth Cleanser. To tone its once again an old fave, Liz Earle Instant Boost Tonic.

I love using an oil on my skin overnight, some of these oils can be super expensive so I’m pleased I’ve found one I love from Caudalie, VineActiv Overnight Detox, these leaves my skin feeling so soft and hydrated, it has definitely become a ride or die for me!

One thing I can’t live without is a good eye cream and at the moment I’m loving the Origins Ginzing eye cream, this cream is definitely worth the hype and although I’m petty late to the party, I can highly recommend this one for brighting and reducing darkness under your eyes!

Once a week or twice a week I exfoliate my face using the Nip n Fab Glycolic scrub which I love and will use a face mask.  I have a range of face masks I love including L’oreal detox clay, any from GlamGlow and the Sephora sheet masks (you need to get your hands on some if you haven’t tried them yet!).

NYX Ultimate Brights Palette

Hey Dolls,

I’m back after a break filled with uni assignments and presentations so let’s get back to talking about beauty! This week I’m reviewing the NYX Ultimate Brights Palette!

IMG_0156

This palette is not only affordable but is really pigmented and the perfect eyeshadow palette for bright looks, pops of colour and even everyday looks using some of the orange shades.

IMG_0157

I was very impressed with the pigment and blendability of the shades, the colours are also buildable so you can create everything from a subtle look to a bright bold eye! The shade range in the palette is also great with everything from yellows to links to blue and greens. If you buy one palette with bright shades in I would highly recommend this one!

Armani Lip Maestros

Hey Dolls,

This week I’m going to be reviewing the Giorgio Armani lip maestro intense velvet lip colour (longest name ever!!)

I got these at duty free so they came as a set of two, a nude (500) and a red (400). Firstly, I was sceptical as I’m not usually a big fan of liquid lipsticks but the fact these are a velvet finish so I thought I’d give it a go!

So glad I took the risk! I was very impressed, these shades are long lasting and super pigmented as well as being really comfortable to wear! Check out the swatches below, they were definitely worth the price tag!
