Skincare: The Basics

Hey dolls,

This week I’m going to be trying to demystify all things skincare after a chat with my lovely friend Beth. Quick disclaimer, I’m not a dermatologist, I’m just sharing what works for me and what I’ve learnt.

So this post is going to be going back to basics from a morning routine to evening routine.

Let’s start with the morning! You might not think it but cleansing your face in the morning is just as important as the evening, but I want something quick so tend to opt for cleansing pads. The Nip ‘n’ Fab ones are my favourites, just sweep all over your face and you are good to go!

Then onto moisturising my face, if you take away one thing from this post let it be this- SPF! Now we’re in spring/summer it’s super important to use a facial SPF every day. Not only does SPF protect your skin from UVA/UVB rays but it also helps to prevent wrinkles and ageing. I’ve been loving the Dermalogica SPF daily moisturiser. It’s super lightweight and sits nicely under makeup. I also use an eye cream to hydrate and brighten my under eyes every morning.

My evening routine is slightly longer but doesn’t take more than 10 minutes!

Step 1: Cleansing/Make-up remover

First of all, ditch the makeup wipes! They are full of drying ingredients, of course fine for a one off but avoid using them everyday.

I love cleansing/removing my makeup with balms or cream cleansers. They remove all the everything from the day and leave your skin feeling fresh. Double cleansing is a great way to make sure your skin is completely clean, you can use the same cleanser twice or a makeup remover followed by a cleanser. La Roche Posay and Liz Earle are my favourite cleanser brands.

Step 2: Toner

This is a step a lot of people will skip, but it’s possibly my favourite part. Using a toner helps to ensure your skin is clean, remove impurities, close pores and restore PH balance. I love the La Roche Posay soothing lotion and Pixi tonics.

Step 3: Serum/Oil (optional)

Serums and oils offer an extra punch to your skincare routine, they way they are made means the ingredients can better penetrate your skin. These are great for anti-ageing, hydration and whole other host of skincare benefits. There are serums that help with pretty much every skincare concern, so my advice here would be do your research!

Step 4: Moisturiser

Moisturising you skin is vital to rehydrate, repair and prevent ageing. Once again there are a range of moisturisers out there for oily, combination and dry skin. My favourite brands are Lancome, La Roche Posay, Clarins and Elizabeth Arden.

Step 5: Eye Cream and lip balm

Keeping your undereyes hydrated is so important as it is a super delicate area and prone to wrinkles. Again there are all sorts of eye creams available, I tend to opt for a brighting cream as I have dark undereyes. My favourite brands are Estee Lauder, Origins and Kielhs. Keeping your lips hydrated is also key, so grab your fave lip balm and pop a good layer on before bed!

Right so that’s every night sorted, now onto your 2 or 3 times a week bits of skincare!

Exfoliating

Exfoliating your skin removes dead skin cells, removes impurities and boosts circulation and a tonne of other benefits. Doing this a couple of times a week will keep your skin looking fresh, be warned if you don’t usually exfoliate you may break out as your face gets rid of the bad stuff. My go to brand for exfoliator is Nip ‘n’ Fab, they are affordable and do the job!

Face masks

This is your pamper time! There are tonnes of face masks out there, all offering different benefits. I try to use a clarifying/detoxing mask once a week and then a hydrating mask once a week. I love the Glam Glow masks (supermud doubles as a great spot treatment!), L’Oreal and Origins masks. Whether you pick up a sheet mask or a pot, choose products that help with your skincare concerns.

Wow, that was a lot to cover! I hope this helps you out, the importance of skincare has been drummed into me since I was young (thanks Mum!) and as she says you only have one face so need to look after it!

Let’s Talk: Body Confidence

Hey dolls,

This week I want to talk about something that I think is really important- body confidence.

Now a days there is so much pressure on us to look and dress a certain way, don’t get me wrong I love insta as much as the next girl but it gives us a tinted view of life. I caught up with my pocket rocket personal trainer Jenna to talk all things body confidence.
7F4AB56E-E917-4DA4-8393-0CF1A1B41464
There are so many variations of body confidence from body positivity to body neutrality but to Jenna body confidence means feeling happy in your own skin no matter you shape or size. This is something I completely agree with because self love is so important.

For me when I eat right and get the endorphins flowing in the gym I feel so much more confident, something Jenna echoes saying that nutrition and exercise could play a role in increasing body confidence but nowadays “looking good seems to trump feeling good”.

Learning to love yourself and the skin your in isn’t easy so Jenna and I have a couple of tips on how you can start to feel body confident.

  1. STOP comparing yourself to others, the only person you should be competing with is yourself and if that means unfollowing people on Instagram do it!
  2. Take the focus off looks and think about your health and well being. Take a day to pamper yourself, put down your phone and eat some feel good food.
  3. Wear what makes you happy! For me fashion is my armour and I truly believe the right outfit can lift your mood and your confidence.

Body confidence isn’t something that comes overnight but it is so important! The journey to self love and confidence is a marathon not a sprint, take your time and it will come!

Let’s Talk:Goal Setting

Hey Dolls,

I’ve decided to start a new series on my blog called ‘Let’s Talk’ to cover a range of different topics from friendship to body confidence because I think it is really important.

goals

So as its the start of a new year I thought the first in the series should be goal setting. I love goal setting, it helps me focus on what I want to achieve! I like to set my goals out into short, medium and more long term.

I’ve always loved having something to work towards and although I don’t set new years resolutions, I always set a goal for the year and this year I’ve decided I would like to participate or host 3 charity events and do some volunteering.

My medium term goal is to graduate university with a First and to move into my own flat, this is something I know will take work but I’m excited to see what will happen in the next few years. My long term goal for years has been to make director by 30 and I’m hoping that one will happen!

So there are my goals, what are yours?

All About: Spray Tanning!

Hey Dolls,

This week we are going to talk about Spray Tans! Now being from Essex, most people (not all unlike the stereotype) like to have a golden glow and I chatted to the Beauty Yard’s Sophie to get all her top tips, so let’s go!

IMG_0144

First up: Prep, this is an extremely important step that will ultimately determine the end result of your tan and here’s how to do it right!

  1. Shave or complete your hair removal at least 24hrs before your tan, to ensure your pores close up properly
  2. Exfoliate your body focusing on dry areas such as elbows, feet and knees
  3. Ensure all your makeup is removed to allow for a perfect tan

IMG_0146

Now lets talk about the tanning process at the salon:

  1. Before you go to the salon make sure you are wearing loose dark clothing, have some flip flops and aren’t wearing any deodorant, moisturiser or other scented products as these can affect the colour of the tan
  2. Once you arrive you will meet your spray tanner, be taken to a therapy room, left to remove your clothes, apply sticky feet and sometimes a hair net, you may also be given paper knickers
  3. Your therapist will then return, giving you instructions on positions to stand in so they can tan you, the tan will be cold, and you will probably be a bit sticky, your therapist will most likely dry you off a bit!

IMG_0145

The last part of spray tan is the aftercare, this is key in prolonging your tan!

  1. Shower at least 8hrs (for most tans some are less, some more so check with your spray tanner) after spray tan
  2. When showering don’t use any products or rub your tan, pat yourself dry and moisturise
  3. Make sure you moisturise after every shower
  4. When the tan starts to go patchy or fade exfoliate to ensure a gradual fade

So that’s all you need to ensure you get a perfect spray tan!

Next week I’ll be sharing my review of Glam Glow face Masks!

All About: Lashes

Hey Dolls,

I headed back to the Beauty Yard to chat to the lovely Tan about the different types of lash enhancements available.

The first thing to choose between is natural enhancing or extensions first let’s talk about enhancing your own lashes!

My favourite thing is LVL lashes (length, volume and lift), it’s basically a perm and tint for your lashes that lasts around 6 weeks, it’s low maintance and cheaper than lash extensions. LVL is also great if you are allergic to lash glue or can’t keep up the maintenance of extensions!

IMG_0140.PNG

Moving on to lash extensions, they come in three main styles classic, Tahitian and Russian! First let’s talk about the process, having a set of lashes will take about 2 hours, with regular maintenance every 2-3 weeks.

It’s really important to go to a lash technician who is personally recommend and to ensure you go for a patch test, not only will this ensure you aren’t allergic to the glue but you can also access the professionalism of the salon and technicians.

Now onto the styles:

Classic- 1 false lash to 1 real lash, last 2-4 weeks, maintenance every 2 weeks, giving a natural look

IMG_0141.PNG

Tahitian- 3 false lashes to 1 real lash, last 2-8 weeks, top up every 2-4 week, giving you a half glam look

IMG_0138

Russian- 6-8 false lashes to 1 real lash, same maintenance and longerity as Tahitian, giving you a full glam look

Next instalment of all about will be tanning!
