University: Year 2

Hey Dolls,

As my uni blogs last year went down really well, I thought I’d do a few more this year so look out for- finding a uni house and finding your placement.

After a crazy long summer (not that I’m complaining) I couldn’t wait to get back to uni and get going with 2nd year! My friends and I couldn’t resist heading to a few freshers events, and ended up leading a bar crawl!

Second year was so much more interesting for me as I had more of a say in which modules I took, which meant I could focus on marketing, social media content and got a chance to complete a law module.

Getting back into the swing of uni was really easy and it was so nice to be living with who I wanted, in our lovely house! 2nd year was full of work but most of my assessments were oddly enjoyable apart from business law which was super intense and made me really happy I didn’t choose a law degree! Although it was really interesting!

The intensity of academic studies had definitely increased but with my amazing society and fab friends everything was nicely balanced. Acapella got bigger and better 2nd year with us being able to do perform lots more and attend more university events! We were also nominated for 2 awards which was fab!

I was also lucky enough to be part of RAG committee for the SU working with a great team to raise money for three amazing causes!

Over all second year was fab- more opportunities, interesting modules and great people! Roll on placement year!

My 1st Year at Uni: Social Life!

Hey Dolls,

This week is part 3 of my uni life series! The third part is all about university social life from societies to nights out!

I can honestly say I have met the best group of friends ever at uni, the friends you make at uni will become your second family and believe me you will spend so much time with that they will feel like your family! Shoutout to my squad for getting me through first year!

At uni I have a tonne of stories including a couple of trips to A&E with my little welsh bombshell! First trip to A&E with Lish was when she got bottled, that was quite scary but looking back on it now we find it funny! 7 1/2hrs in A&E on a Friday night can actually be quite entertaining!

We have had many a drunken night out including a night out dressed as cowgirls which resulted in Caprice and I lasting in the club for a total of 13 minutes! Surely that has to be a record! Haha!

Not only will you have crazy nights out with your best friends, you will most likely join a society like I did! I absolutely adore my Acapella family and this year would not have been the same without them! I would definitely say through yourself into uni societies because you will meet a tonne of different people.

Societies also give you the opportunity to meet 2nd and 3rd years (hello uni advice and friends who know what they are doing!) Shoutout to my Acapella mum Hannah and fellow Essex girl Sophie for being fab the past year! Uni will also give you the opportunity to support people as they grow in confidence (we turned Hazel into a drinker haha)

First year of uni has been absolutely amazing and wouldn’t have been the same without all the amazing people that DMU have bought into my life, I love you all and roll on second year!!

My 1st Year at Uni: Academic life!

Hey dolls,

This week is all about what academic life is like at university and I can honestly tell you it’s so different to A Levels and sixth form.

The first main different is the way you are taught, instead of small class rooms you will have lectures in huge rooms of up to around 200 students. This can be quite intimidating at first but just remember everyone is in the same position as you and you will soon get used to it. To supplement your studies you will also most likely have tutorials or seminars, these are in small groups of up to 20 in class rooms where you ask questions and do group activities.

Assessments are different too! Just like sixth form they will probably be a mix of exams and coursework. In your assignments you will get less support that previously which can be worrying but there are plenty of people around to help for example the library. In your assignments you will also be required to reference, this is a pain but you soon get used to it!

At DMU, we are also given a range of global opportunities through #DMUGlobal. This year I went to New York with my course and did some work with fashion brands as well as exploring an amazing city.

You also make great friends through your course, mine being Carolyn and Jordan who I went to NYC with. These two have been fab and have always been there when I’ve had a silly little question or needed some motivation! We all motivate each other and I don’t think this year would have been the same without them!

If anyone has any questions about uni drop them in the comments and I will answer then for you the best I can!

Next week is all about uni life in general with some stories for you!

My 1st Year at Uni: Moving in & Freshers

Hey Dolls,

This week is the first of 3 blog posts about my first year at University! The three posts will be Moving in & Freshers, Lectures and Academic Life and Uni life in general. So lets get going!!

Going to university is a very scary prospect with so many choices to make! I can honestly say I am so grateful that I am at the university I am, De Montfort. The university and students have made me feel so welcome and I can’t picture myself anywhere else.

Moving In:

This was probably the day I have felt the most mix up of emotions, sad to be leaving home but excited about whats to come! You will have a lot of stuff!!

Moving in was super chaotic but also really fun! The halls I live in made it so easy with people to help with stuff, staff telling us where to park and music in the courtyard. I felt extremely welcome!

Anyone who knows me will know I am super organised so before going uni shopping (which is super fun) I made a very detailed list of everything I would need which I highly recommend! (stay tuned for my Uni preparation tips and tricks coming in August) This way I knew I was prepared and had everything I would need!

When I got to my accommodation, I unpacked (with help from mum&dad), left my door open so I could chat with my new flat mates and then Caprice arrived, little did I know she would end up being one of my best friends! The two of us with our parents stood chatting in the kitchen for hours then it was time to say bye to Mum and Dad and get ready for our first night out!!

That brings me nicely on to FRESHERS!!

Freshers Week!

This will honestly be the craziest, most tiring and probably one of the best weeks of your life! DMU put on 9 days of events from UV parties, to bar crawls and everything in between!

Freshers week was when I met my now best friends, this is the best time to meet new people and mingle so make sure you do! Shoutout to Elisha and Tash for being fab friends this year (more stories including them in my 3rd post!) This was also where I bonded with the lovely Georgia, the girl who keeps me sane in all the craziness! We bonded because me being me fell over, bruised my ankle and then smashed a glass on bar crawl night before I’d even had a sip of alcohol!

Freshers week is also a chance for you to find out about all the societies you can get involved in and all the different activities that are available to you on campus!

DMU also host a Matriculation Ceremony where you get introduced to all the important people at the university who wear their gowns! There was also a show case of a variety of activities!

The first few weeks of uni are mad but so much fun!

I’ll see you all next week for what academic uni life is like!
